How Laser Eye Surgery Will Save You Money Over 5–10 Years

The laser eye surgery cost may seem steep upfront. But in the long run, it often wins, compared to the ongoing costs associated with glasses and contact lenses. This is especially true if you live in daily contact lenses.

At Re:vision in Auckland, our eye surgeons have helped countless Kiwis with laser vision correction. In this guide, we reveal the numbers. We map what you spend (roughly) on glasses and contacts, and add the hidden bits people forget. And then we stack that next to the cost of laser vision correction surgery for both eyes.

By the end of this read, you’ll know your approximate five- and ten-year totals, your break-even point, and who’s likely to save the fastest.

Costs now vs. 5 and 10 years

Here’s a simple side-by-side view of costs.

It shows what most Kiwis pay for glasses and contact lenses now, and what that adds up to over five and ten years. There are no hidden extras in this table (just the direct spend). We’ll look at the hidden costs after this. And they're certainly worth considering, because they add up pretty fast.

There are also the costs you don’t see on a receipt. Time. Trips to and from vision assessments and frame repairs. Ordering lenses. Cleaning routines every night. Lost frames. Cracked lenses. All that stuff matters, too.

Note that the figures you see here are average New Zealand figures. Your spend may sit higher or lower. This typically depends on things like your script, the frames and lenses you pick, how often you replace them, the brand you buy, how much solution you use, and the exam fees or deals you manage to score.

What the laser eye surgery fee covers

At Re:vision, LASIK and PRK are $3,500 per eye. And this doesn't just include surgery and theatre fees. It's all-inclusive, covering the whole journey. 24-month interest-free is also available through Q Card and Gem. In this case, both eyes work out to roughly $292 a month for two years, then $0.

The package includes:

  • Comprehensive assessment and scans: We take full corneal maps and give you a straight call on suitability. You sit with one of our experienced eye surgeons and agree on a plan you understand.
  • Surgery day: You arrive to modern lasers, a highly trained team, and tight infection control. We give you clear pre-op steps and simple aftercare you can follow at home.
  • Meds and take-home aftercare: We send you home with antibiotic and steroid eye drops, lubricants, and night shields. Your pack includes written timings for every dose.
  • Planned follow-ups: We book checks until your vision settles. And we’re available after hours if you need help.
  • Written enhancement policy: We put the time window and the exact criteria for any touch-up in writing.

Who saves most, and the honest caveats

Not everyone saves at the same rate. Here’s the simple version:

  • Daily disposable contact users save the fastest: Most hit break-even in about five to six years.
  • Monthly or fortnightly lens users come next: Most land around eight or nine years.
  • Mixed users sit in the middle: Many reach break-even in about seven years.
  • Glasses-only upgraders take longer: Expect 12–15+ years. You’ll get there sooner if you buy premium frames, progressives, and prescription sunnies on a regular cycle.

Note, cheap bulk contacts push break-even later. Designer frames and frequent upgrades pull it forward.

A small number of people may need laser eye surgery touch-ups later. And most people need simple reading glasses as they age. Because of this, it's always a good idea to run your own numbers.
